Background

Cytochrome c is a small, highly conserved heme-containing electron-transfer protein located in the intermembrane space of mitochondria, where it shuttles electrons between Complex III and Complex IV of the respiratory chain via reversible Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ redox changes in its covalently attached heme group, and, beyond its bioenergetic role, its release into the cytosol in response to apoptotic stimuli nucleates the apoptosome by binding Apaf-1, making it a central switch between life-sustaining respiration and programmed cell death.
