Background
Mouse C3 is a central and essential component of the complement system, acting as the pivotal convergence point for all three complement activation pathways: classical, lectin, and alternative. This ~186 kDa protein, primarily synthesized in the liver, is proteolytically cleaved into two key fragments upon activation: the anaphylatoxin C3a, which recruits and activates immune cells, and the opsonin C3b, which tags pathogens for phagocytosis and amplifies the complement cascade. Its critical roles include mediating innate immune defense against infections, clearing immune complexes and apoptotic cells, and bridging innate and adaptive immunity. Consequently, Mouse C3 is a major focus of research in infectious disease, autoimmunity (e.g., lupus), neuroinflammation, and ischemia-reperfusion injury, with genetically modified C3-deficient mice being a fundamental tool for elucidating its precise functions in vivo.
