Background
Tetraspanin-33 (Tspan-33, encoded by TSPAN33, also called Penumbra) is a four-transmembrane-domain protein of the tetraspanin superfamily that is virtually absent from resting B cells but strongly induced upon activation, localizes to membrane microvilli, the Golgi and extracellular vesicles, and functions as a key regulator of human B-lymphocyte endocytosis, adhesion and migration by modulating plasma-membrane tension and cytoskeletal dynamics; it is furthermore expressed in several lymphomas and autoimmune diseases, qualifying it as a potential diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target for malignant B cells.
