Background

Alkaline Phosphatase, Germ Cell (GCAP) is a tissue-specific isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase. It is primarily expressed in primordial germ cells and the placenta, making it a classic immunohistochemical marker for germ cell tumors (GCTs), such as seminomas and dysgerminomas. Its high expression in these malignancies aids in distinguishing GCTs from other cancer types. While its precise physiological role remains unclear, it is believed to be involved in cell migration and differentiation during early development. Clinically, measuring GCAP levels is valuable for diagnosing, staging, and monitoring treatment response in patients with germ cell-derived cancers.
