Background
Monkey IgM, the largest antibody isotype with a pentameric structure (approximately 900 kDa) and 10 antigen-binding sites, serves as the essential first line of defense in the primary immune response, mediating initial pathogen neutralization and complement activation while being largely confined to the serum compartment due to its size. In monkeys (e.g., Macaca mulatta), IgM-positive B-cells develop progressively from low levels in infants, reaching near-adult levels around 5 months, with highly variable expression (26.3–94.9%) observed in adults—a critical factor for baseline screening in research models like transplantation studies. Careful sample handling (centrifugation, storage at -70°C) and awareness of assay cross-reactivity are important technical considerations. Commercially available kits and reagents enable precise quantification and analysis across clinical diagnostics and biomedical research, underscoring IgM's critical role in primate immunity.
