Background
SFXN1/TCC (sideroflexin-1/tricarboxylate carrier) is an ~35 kDa integral inner-mitochondrial-membrane protein that functions as a metabolite transporter, exporting mitochondrial acetyl-CoA to the cytosol for lipogenesis and importing serine (and possibly tricarboxylates or iron-related substrates) into the matrix to support one-carbon metabolism, heme/iron–sulfur biogenesis and redox balance, with mutations causing flexed-tail anemia and mitochondrial iron overload in mice and implicating the carrier in human metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders.
