Background
Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) is a member of the IL-6 family of cytokines. It is a multifunctional glycoprotein with a molecular weight ranging from 28 to 45 kDa, depending on the expression system and post-translational modifications. LIF is composed of a signal peptide, an extracellular domain, and an intracellular domain, which collectively endow it with diverse biological functions. LIF is expressed in various tissues, including the liver, lungs, heart, nervous system, and immune cells, highlighting its widespread distribution and significance.
LIF is a critical cytokine widely used in biomedical research, particularly in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. It also plays a crucial role in maintaining the pluripotency and inducing the differentiation of stem cells, the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, the modulation of inflammatory responses.
