Background
SLC15A4 (also known as PHT1) is an endolysosomal proton-coupled transporter that mediates the uptake of free histidine and selected dipeptides from the lysosomal lumen into the cytosol, and it moonlights as a scaffold protein by recruiting the adaptor TASL to the lysosome, thereby enabling Toll-like receptor 7–9 signaling, activation of the transcription factor IRF5, and downstream production of type I interferons central to antiviral innate immunity.
