Background

Lipocalin-2, also known as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), is a multifunctional protein that belongs to the lipocalin family. It is primarily expressed in neutrophils and certain epithelial cells. NGAL plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including iron homeostasis, where it binds and sequesters iron-loaded bacterial siderophores to inhibit bacterial growth, thus contributing to the immune defense mechanism. Additionally, it is involved in cellular differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. In clinical contexts, NGAL has emerged as a biomarker for early detection of acute kidney injury, as its levels in urine and blood can rise rapidly in response to renal ischemia or nephrotoxic injury. Furthermore, it has been implicated in the progression of several cancers, where it may influence tumor growth, metastasis, and response to therapy, making it a potential target for cancer diagnostics and treatment.
