Background
FbpB/Ag85B is a 30 kDa secreted fibronectin-binding mycolyltransferase that catalyzes the transfer of mycolic acids to arabinogalactan and trehalose monomycolates, thereby building trehalose dimycolate (cord factor) and maintaining the integrity of the mycobacterial cell wall, while simultaneously functioning as the immunodominant antigen of the antigen 85 complex that strongly induces Th1-biased cellular and humoral immunity through IFN-γ, IL-2 and antibody production, making it a key adhesin for host-cell attachment and a leading subunit vaccine candidate against tuberculosis.
