Background
Dextran is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide composed primarily of glucose units linked by α-1,6-glycosidic bonds in the main chain, with branches formed by α-1,3-glycosidic bonds. It is typically synthesized through the fermentation of sucrose by certain lactic acid bacteria, such as Leuconostoc mesenteroides. Due to its excellent biocompatibility, water solubility, and biodegradability, dextran has wide-ranging applications in the biomedical field. For instance, it is used as a plasma volume expander for treating hypovolemic shock, as a carrier in drug delivery systems, and as a medium in chromatography and cell culture substrates. Furthermore, by controlling its molecular weight and through chemical modification, its applications can be expanded into areas such as tissue engineering and molecular biology.
