Background
CD1c is a member of the CD1 family of transmembrane glycoproteins that are structurally related to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins and form heterodimers with beta-2-microglobulin. It is involved in the presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens of self or microbial origin to T cells. The protein encoded by this gene is broadly distributed throughout the endocytic system via a tyrosine-based motif in the cytoplasmic tail. CD1c is highly expressed in dendritic cells and is also found in other immune-related tissues. It plays a role in adaptive immunity, tissue homeostasis, and autoimmune diseases.
