Background

CD184, also known as CXCR4 or fusin, is a 45 kD seven-transmembrane G-protein-linked CXC chemokine receptor. It is widely expressed on various human cells, including leukocytes, hematopoietic stem cells, epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and cancer cells. This receptor is specific for stromal-derived factor-1 (SDF-1, also called CXCL12) and plays a crucial role in cell migration, hematopoiesis, cell homing, and the proliferation of non-hematopoietic cells. Additionally, CXCR4 serves as a co-receptor for T-cell tropic HIV viruses, enabling their entry into human lymphocytes. In cancer, CXCR4 is involved in tumor cell survival, proliferation, migration, and metastasis, making it a potential therapeutic target.
