Background
Transferrin is a glycoprotein with an approximate molecular weight of 76.5 kDa. It is believed to have originated from an ancient gene duplication event, resulting in homologous C and N-terminal domains that each bind one ferric ion. The primary function of transferrin is to transport iron from the intestine, reticuloendothelial system, and liver parenchymal cells to proliferating cells throughout the body. Additionally, transferrin may serve a physiological role as a granulocyte/pollens-binding protein (GPBP), which is involved in the clearance of certain organic materials and allergens from the serum.
