Background
Beta-defensin 2 is a key component of the innate immune system, known for its antimicrobial properties and immunomodulatory functions. It is produced by various epithelial cells in response to microbial infections and plays a crucial role in host defense against pathogens. Beta-defensin 2 exhibits potent antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, by disrupting their cell membranes. In addition to its direct antimicrobial effects, beta-defensin 2 also functions as a chemoattractant for immune cells, such as neutrophils, monocytes, and dendritic cells, promoting their recruitment to sites of infection. Furthermore, beta-defensin 2 can modulate inflammatory responses by regulating cytokine production and promoting wound healing.
