Background
SKP1 (S-phase kinase-associated protein 1) is a core adaptor subunit of the SCF (SKP1-Cullin1-F-box) class of E3 ubiquitin ligases. By bridging the Cullin-1 scaffold to variable F-box proteins, SKP1 determines which substrates are poly-ubiquitylated and subsequently degraded by the 26 S proteasome. In this way SKP1 controls eukaryotic cell-cycle transitions, signal transduction, transcription, circadian rhythms and stress responses.
