Background
BTN1A1, also known as BTN, is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and the major milk fat droplet-associated protein. It may function as a cell surface receptor. The human butyrophilin gene, located in the MHC class I region on chromosome 6p, likely originated through exon shuffling between two ancestral gene families. BTN1A1 regulates milk lipid content and droplet size and inhibits proliferation of anti-CD3-activated CD4 and CD8 T-cells, as well as T-cell metabolism and secretion of IL2 and IFNG.
