Background
Stem Cell Factor (SCF), also known as KIT ligand (KITL), Steel factor (SF), or mast cell growth factor (MGF), is a critical cytokine encoded by the SCF gene in Anas platyrhynchos (Northern mallard/domestic duck). The duck SCF gene was first molecularly characterized by Li et al., who cloned the full-length cDNA and analyzed its expression patterns in different colored feather bulbs.
SCF is the primary cytokine responsible for self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in avian species. In mallard models, SCF: Supports sustained proliferation of erythroid progenitors in vitro;
Acts synergistically with IL-3, GM-CSF, and erythropoietin to stimulate hematopoietic colony formation; Maintains HSC quiescence and survival in the bone marrow niche through interaction with c-KIT+ osteoblasts and endothelial cells.
