Background

Tim23 is an essential subunit of the TIM23 translocase in the mitochondrial inner membrane, where it serves as both a structural scaffold and a voltage-gated component that recognizes presequences of incoming precursor proteins in the intermembrane space, triggers channel opening in response to membrane potential, and—together with Tim17, Tim44, mtHsp70 and other motor proteins—forms a highly conserved multiprotein machine that imports ~1,000 matrix-destined and inner-membrane proteins from the cytosol into mitochondria, thereby undergirding organellar biogenesis and cellular energy metabolism.
