Background
Phospho-SMAD1 (Ser463/465)/SMAD5 (Ser463/465)/SMAD9 (Ser465/467) proteins are the BMP-activated, C-terminally phosphorylated forms of the R-SMADs 1, 5 and 9 that, upon phosphorylation by activated type-I BMP receptors, form heteromeric complexes with co-SMAD4, translocate into the nucleus and directly bind to BMP-responsive promoter elements to orchestrate transcriptional programs governing cell fate, proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis across developmental and homeostatic contexts.
