Background
IL-13 (Interleukin-13) is a key cytokine primarily produced by activated Th2 cells, mast cells, and basophils. It is a central mediator in type 2 immune responses, playing a critical role in the pathogenesis of allergic inflammation. Its main functions include inducing IgE class switching in B cells, promoting mucus hypersecretion in airway epithelial cells, and contributing to tissue fibrosis by stimulating fibroblast proliferation and collagen production. Furthermore, IL-13 is instrumental in the defense against helminthic parasites by facilitating their expulsion from the gastrointestinal tract.
