Background
Transforming Growth Factor-β2 (TGF-β2) is a secreted homodimeric cytokine belonging to the TGF-β superfamily, encoded by the Tgfb2 gene in mice. Among the three mammalian TGF-β isoforms, TGF-β2 exhibits distinctive biological properties, most notably its unique activation mechanism that does not rely on the classical integrin-binding RGD motif present in TGF-β1 and TGF-β3, but instead requires covalent linkage to immobilized matrix or cell-surface molecules. In mouse development, TGF-β2 is indispensable; Tgfb2-null mice exhibit perinatal lethality with a broad spectrum of defects encompassing cardiac, pulmonary, craniofacial, limb, ocular, and urogenital systems.
