Background
STEAP1 (Six-Transmembrane Epithelial Antigen of the Prostate 1) is a metalloreductase protein that plays a crucial role in cellular iron and copper homeostasis by facilitating the reduction of Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ and Cu²⁺ to Cu⁺, thereby enabling the transport of these essential metal ions across cell membranes. Primarily expressed in prostate epithelium, STEAP1 has gained significant attention as a promising therapeutic target in oncology, particularly for prostate cancer, where it is frequently overexpressed and serves as a cell surface antigen for antibody-drug conjugates and CAR-T cell therapies.
