Background

Snail protein, a zinc-finger transcription factor encoded by the SNAI1 gene, is a master regulator of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) that represses E-cadherin and other epithelial genes, thereby promoting cell motility, invasion, and stemness, and its overexpression in diverse carcinomas is strongly linked to metastasis, chemoresistance, and poor prognosis through activation of oncogenic signaling pathways such as TGF-β, Wnt/β-catenin, and NF-κB, while its activity is modulated by post-translational modifications, including phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and acetylation, making it both a biomarker and a therapeutic target in cancer biology.
