Background

Rat IgM is the primary immunoglobulin involved in the initial B-cell-mediated immune response in rats. As a pentamer, it possesses ten antigen-binding sites, granting it high avidity for pathogens, which is crucial for early defense when antibody affinity is still low. Its key functions include effective agglutination and neutralization of invaders. Furthermore, the pentameric structure enables rat IgM to be a potent activator of the classical complement pathway, leading to strong opsonic and lytic effects. In research, rat IgM antibodies are vital tools. They are widely used in immunoassays like ELISA and flow cytometry for detecting specific antigens. Monoclonal rat IgM antibodies are particularly valuable for studying early humoral immunity, B-cell development, and infectious disease models in rodents.
