Background
Rat Ig (immunoglobulin) is a Y-shaped glycoprotein produced by B lymphocytes and plasma cells that functions as the central effector molecule of the humoral immune response; it consists of two identical heavy chains and two identical light chains whose variable regions confer antigen specificity, while the constant region determines isotype (IgM, IgG subclasses, IgA, IgE, or IgD) and thereby governs downstream effector mechanisms such as complement activation, opsonization, and Fc-receptor-mediated cellular responses in the rat.
