Background

Rat C5a protein is a potent 74-amino acid anaphylatoxin generated during the activation of the complement system, specifically through the proteolytic cleavage of the fifth complement component (C5) by C5 convertase into C5a and C5b. As a key mediator of innate immunity in rats, it functions primarily as a strong chemoattractant that recruits neutrophils, monocytes, and other inflammatory cells to sites of infection or tissue injury by binding with high affinity to its specific G-protein-coupled receptor, C5aR1 (CD88), and the secondary receptor C5L2. Upon receptor engagement, Rat C5a triggers diverse downstream signaling cascades that induce robust pro-inflammatory responses, including increased vascular permeability, smooth muscle contraction, degranulation of mast cells and basophils, and the release of reactive oxygen species and cytokines, thereby playing a critical dual role in host defense against pathogens and in the pathogenesis of excessive inflammation associated with conditions such as sepsis, arthritis, and ischemia-reperfusion injury in rodent models.
