Background
Beta-Nerve Growth Factor (β-NGF), also known as NGFB, is a neurotrophic factor that plays a crucial role in the survival and differentiation of neurons, particularly in the peripheral and central nervous systems. It is a basic protein of 118 amino acids that acts as a trophic factor for sensory and sympathetic neurons of the peripheral nervous system, as well as for cholinergic neurons of the anterior basal forebrain. In rats, β-NGF is synthesized by neurons and non-neural cells and is involved in the maturation of various organs and the regulation of metabolic homeostasis. Pancreatic beta cells from rats synthesize and secrete NGF and express high-affinity TrkA receptors and low-affinity p75NTR neurotrophin receptors for NGF. β-NGF is also associated with the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as trauma response leads to methylation of DNA nucleotides responsible for NGF expression
