Background

Mouse IL-6, also known as interleukin-6, is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a crucial role in the immune response, hematopoiesis, inflammation, and the acute phase response. It is primarily produced by T cells, macrophages, monocytes, endothelial cells, and muscle cells. IL-6 binds to the IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and triggers the association of IL-6R with gp130, leading to signal transduction through JAKs and STATs. This cytokine stimulates B cell differentiation and antibody production, supports the growth of myeloma and plasmacytoma, and aids in nerve cell differentiation. Additionally, IL-6 acts as a myokine, produced by muscle cells in response to muscle contraction, and helps in breaking down fats and improving insulin resistance. In mice, IL-6 is also a dominant endocrine cytokine induced by acute stress, playing a role in stress hyperglycemia and the "fight or flight" response.
