Background

Mouse IL-6, or interleukin 6, is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including immune response, inflammation, and hematopoiesis. It is a small polypeptide with a molecular weight of approximately 21.7 kDa, consisting of 185 amino acids and is encoded by the Il6 gene located on chromosome 5 in mice. IL-6 is produced by a variety of cell types, including B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, macrophages, and fibroblasts. It has both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory effects, contributing to the modulation of immune responses. IL-6 is involved in the differentiation of B cells into plasma cells and the activation of T cells, particularly in promoting the development of Th17 cells while inhibiting regulatory T cells. Additionally, it plays a significant role in the acute phase response, stimulating the production of acute-phase proteins by hepatocytes. IL-6 exerts its effects through binding to membrane-bound or soluble IL-6 receptors, which then interact with the gp130 receptor for signal transduction. This cytokine is also implicated in various diseases due to its ability to influence immune responses and inflammation.
