Background
Interleukin-12 p70 (IL-12 p70) is a disulfide-linked heterodimeric cytokine composed of a 35-kDa light chain (p35) and a 40-kDa heavy chain (p40), functioning as the biologically active form of IL-12 secreted primarily by antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells, macrophages, and B cells upon recognition of pathogens; it drives the differentiation of naïve CD4+ T cells toward the Th1 phenotype, synergizes with IL-18 to induce large amounts of IFN-γ from T and NK cells, bridges innate and adaptive immunity, and is implicated in protective immunity against intracellular bacteria, viruses, and tumors, yet its dysregulation contributes to autoimmune and inflammatory disorders.
