Background
CD66a/c/e are closely related glycoproteins of the carcinoembryonic-antigen family that share an N-terminal IgV-like domain followed by up to three IgC2-like domains, differ mainly in membrane anchorage (CD66a is transmembrane whereas CD66c and CD66e are GPI-linked), and collectively mediate calcium-independent homophilic and heterophilic adhesion, pathogen recognition (e.g., gonococcal Opa proteins bind peptide determinants in their N-domains), neutrophil activation, and modulation of innate and adaptive immunity, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and tumor behavior.
