Background
Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), also known as CSF2, is a monomeric glycoprotein cytokine produced by a variety of cells, including activated T cells, macrophages, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts. It functions as a hematopoietic growth factor that stimulates the proliferation, differentiation, and survival of myeloid progenitor cells, giving rise to granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils) and macrophages. Beyond its role in hematopoiesis, GM-CSF activates mature myeloid cells, enhancing their phagocytic capacity, antigen presentation, and production of pro-inflammatory mediators, thereby bridging innate and adaptive immunity. Dysregulated GM-CSF signaling has been implicated in chronic inflammatory disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis), allergic airway disease, and certain malignancies, making it an attractive therapeutic target.
Monkey GM-CSF refers to the orthologous protein derived from non-human primates such as cynomolgus (Macaca fascicularis) and rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Owing to the high degree of sequence conservation and cross-species bioactivity between monkey and human GM-CSF, the monkey protein is widely employed in preclinical research. Recombinant monkey GM-CSF is used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of GM-CSF-neutralizing antibodies, receptor antagonists, and small-molecule modulators in translational models of inflammation, autoimmunity, and cancer immunotherapy.
