Background
Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) is a pleiotropic cytokine belonging to the IL-6 family that plays crucial roles in maintaining pluripotency and regulating cell differentiation in avian species. In Anas platyrhynchos (Northern mallard/domestic duck), LIF has been molecularly characterized through cloning studies in related duck species.
LIF protein represents a critical cytokine for stem cell biology, though with species-specific functional distinctions from mammalian systems. While duck ESC derivation primarily relies on ovotransferrin and small molecule inhibitors (Wnt, PKC, ALK inhibitors), LIF serves as an important synergistic factor for enhancing pluripotency and self-renewal in certain culture formulations.
