Background
HIV p24 is a viral protein that forms the main structural component of the HIV capsid, the conical shell that encases the virus's RNA genome and essential replication enzymes (reverse transcriptase, integrase, and protease). Because p24 is produced in large quantities during the early stages of acute HIV infection—even before the body generates detectable antibodies—it serves as a critical early biomarker for HIV diagnosis. Detection of p24 antigen is a key feature of fourth-generation HIV combination tests, which simultaneously screen for both p24 and HIV antibodies. This allows for identifying infections as early as 2–3 weeks post-exposure, significantly shortening the diagnostic "window period" compared to older antibody-only tests. Beyond diagnostics, p24 is also used in research and laboratory monitoring, such as quantifying viral production in cell culture or evaluating the efficacy of antiretroviral drugs in preclinical studies.
