Background
Interleukin-17F (IL-17F) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine belonging to the IL-17 cytokine family. In rats, IL-17F is predominantly expressed by activated T-helper 17 (Th17) cells, CD8+ T cells, γδ T cells, and innate immune cells such as neutrophils and macrophages. The rat IL-17F protein shares about 55% sequence homology with IL-17A and can form homodimers or heterodimers with IL-17A, both of which exert biological effects by binding to the IL-17 receptor complex (IL-17RA and IL-17RC).
IL-17F is involved in host defense against bacterial and fungal infections and plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease. In rat models, IL-17F has been shown to induce neutrophil recruitment, promote the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and contribute to tissue inflammation and bone destruction.
