Background
Interleukin-17A (IL-17A), also known as CTLA8, is a proinflammatory cytokine belonging to the IL-17 family (which includes six members: IL-17A through IL-17F), produced by activated T cells as well as various innate and adaptive immune cells. Structurally, IL-17A exists in both glycosylated and nonglycosylated forms. Functionally, it regulates NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways, stimulates the expression of IL-6 and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and enhances nitric oxide (NO) production, thereby mediating diverse cellular processes including proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Clinically, elevated IL-17 levels are strongly associated with several chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis, making it a key therapeutic target for inflammatory disorders.
