Background
Interleukin-15 (IL-15) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a critical role in the development, activation, and survival of various immune cells, particularly natural killer (NK) cells and CD8+ T cells. In mice, IL-15 has been shown to promote the expansion and activation of these immune cells, which are essential for immune surveillance and defense against infections and tumors.
IL-15 acts through a receptor complex composed of IL-15Rα, IL-2Rβ, and the common γ-chain (γc). This complex is necessary for high-affinity binding and signaling, which drives the proliferation and differentiation of immune cells. Studies have demonstrated that IL-15 can enhance the cytotoxic activity of NK cells and memory CD8+ T cells, contributing to antitumor responses.
