Background
Soluble Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (sICAM-1) is found in the bloodstream and originates from the proteolytic cleavage of membrane-bound ICAM-1 (found on endothelial and immune cells). Elevated serum levels are primarily a marker of endothelial activation and systemic inflammation. Meanwhile, while serum ICAM-1 is not a disease-specific diagnostic test, it serves as a valuable and sensitive marker of systemic endothelial activation and inflammation. Its measurement provides insight into the activity and severity of various conditions, particularly in cardiovascular, autoimmune, and oncologic diseases, and can help in risk stratification and monitoring.
