Background
Soluble Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (sICAM-1) is found in the bloodstream and originates from the proteolytic cleavage of membrane-bound ICAM-1 (found on endothelial and immune cells). Elevated serum levels are primarily a marker of endothelial activation and systemic inflammation. Meanwhile, while serum ICAM-1 is not a disease-specific diagnostic test, it serves as a valuable and sensitive marker of systemic endothelial activation and inflammation.
