Background
CD102, also known as Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-2 (ICAM-2), is a transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is constitutively expressed on endothelial cells, leukocytes, and platelets. As a ligand for the leukocyte integrin LFA-1 (αLβ2), CD102 plays a crucial role in mediating leukocyte adhesion, transmigration across the endothelium, and immune synapse formation during inflammation and immune responses. Its expression is less inducible by inflammatory cytokines compared to ICAM-1. CD102 is essential for lymphocyte homing and the recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection or injury, contributing to both innate and adaptive immunity.
