Background
Guinea pig immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the predominant class of antibodies found in the serum of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), playing a central role in their adaptive immune response by neutralizing pathogens, opsonizing microbes, and activating the complement system. Structurally similar to typical mammalian IgG, it possesses unique biochemical characteristics such as a higher molecular weight (approx. 180 kDa) due to significant glycosylation and strong binding affinity for Protein A, which is uncommon in many other rodent antibodies. These distinctive properties, coupled with the guinea pig's importance as a model for human diseases (e.g., tuberculosis, allergy, and vaccine research), make its IgG highly valuable in biomedical science. It is extensively utilized as a critical reagent in various immunoassays—including ELISA, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry—serving both as a primary therapeutic research target and as a specific secondary antibody in cross-species experimental designs.
