Background
Guca1a is a calcium-binding protein predominantly expressed in retinal photoreceptor cells. It binds calcium ions and, using this as a signal, dynamically regulates guanylyl cyclase activity according to intracellular calcium concentration—activating the enzyme when calcium levels are low and inhibiting it when calcium levels rise. This fine-tuned regulation is a critical step in photoreceptor recovery from light stimulation back to the dark state. The protein contains four EF-hand domains and undergoes myristoylation at its N-terminus. Studies have shown that mutations or functional abnormalities in its encoding gene are closely associated with retinal degenerative diseases such as cone dystrophy.
