Background

GPD2 (glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 2, mitochondrial) is a 727-amino-acid, FAD-binding inner-mitochondrial-membrane enzyme that catalyzes the irreversible oxidation of glycerol-3-phosphate to dihydroxyacetone phosphate, feeding electrons into the respiratory chain at coenzyme Q and thereby serving as the rate-limiting component of the glycerol-phosphate shuttle that re-oxidizes cytosolic NADH to sustain glycolysis; it is expressed ubiquitously, its activity modulates glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, reactive-oxygen-species generation, platelet activation and bleeding risk, and its gene (chr2q24.1) produces two transcripts encoding the same protein.
