Background
Human Growth Differentiation Factor 11 (GDF11), also known as Bone Morphogenetic Protein 11 (BMP11), is a secreted ligand belonging to the TGF-β superfamily, encoded by the GDF11 gene on chromosome 12q13.2. While its primary and best-established function lies in regulating anterior-posterior axial skeletal patterning and neurogenesis during embryonic development, its role in adult physiology—particularly regarding aging and regeneration—remains highly controversial and actively debated. In academia, GDF11 is a focal point of research across several domains: developmental biology (somitogenesis, neural stem cell regulation), cardiovascular biology (contradictory roles in cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial infarction), and neurology (neurogenesis and cognitive decline).
