Background

ALDH1L1 (10-formyltetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase) is a 902-residue cytosolic enzyme that oxidizes 10-formyl-THF to CO₂ and THF while reducing NADP⁺ to NADPH, thereby governing one-carbon flux for purine synthesis, mitochondrial 10-formyl-THF export, and cellular redox balance, and its selective expression in astrocytes makes it the most widely used immunohistochemical marker of these glial cells across the mammalian CNS.
