Background
AADC protein (aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase) is a key catalytic enzyme in living organisms, primarily responsible for catalyzing the decarboxylation of aromatic amino acids to produce corresponding monoamine neurotransmitters. In the human body, it converts L-DOPA into dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptophan into serotonin, thereby playing an irreplaceable role in central nervous system signaling, motor regulation, mood control, and endocrine function. As AADC is a rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis pathways of dopamine and serotonin, abnormalities in its activity or genetic mutations can lead to severe neurodevelopmental disorders such as AADC deficiency, characterized by movement disorders and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Therefore, this protein is not only an important target in neurobiological research but also a key focus of gene therapy and drug development for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
