A New Boost for Immunohistochemistry: The Launch of Recombinant Rabbit Monoclonal Antibodies Against Helicobacter pylori (Hp)!

What is Helicobacter pylori?

Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is a Gram-negative, microaerophilic, and slow-growing bacterium. Its helical shape has evolved to penetrate the gastric mucus layer, thereby causing infection. Once Hp infects the human gastric mucosa, it leads to long-term colonization and inflammation. Currently, H. pylori plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including peptic ulcer disease, gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and intestinal-type gastric cancer. In China, the infection rate of H. pylori is over 50%, making it one of the most common bacterial infections.

Detection Methods for Helicobacter pylori

Currently, Hp detection methods can be divided into invasive and non-invasive approaches.
Invasive Methods:
  • Endoscopy
  • Histopathological section staining
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
  • Hp isolation and culture identification
  • Rapid urease test (RUT)
Non-invasive Methods:
  • Urease breath test
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
  • Immunochromatographic assay (ICA)
  • Immuno-blotting test (IBT)
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Method

Studies have reported that compared with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, IHC staining has higher sensitivity (97.3%) and specificity (100.0%) for detecting Hp infection. Moreover, when staining tissue sections, the absence of background color interference in IHC staining facilitates microscopic examination. Among the three histological staining methods (methylene blue staining, IHC staining, and Giemsa staining), IHC staining has the highest diagnostic efficiency with a consistency of 0.754 with the gold standard. Therefore, IHC can be selected in clinical practice to achieve the best detection results, providing a strong basis for early diagnosis.
