Background
Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is mainly responsible for catalyzing the conversion of pyruvate into lactate. It is present in almost all living cells. It consists of four subunits forming a tetramer and can form five different subtypes of LDH. Their enzymatic properties are similar, but there are obvious specific differences in tissue distribution. LDH-M and LDH-H subunits are encoded by the LDHA and LDHB genes and can also be expressed as LDHA and LDHB. LDHC is the testis-specific LDH protein.
