Flow cytometric analysis of Human CD235a/b expression on Human Peripheral Blood cells. Human Peripheral Blood cells were stained with Brilliant Violet 786™ Mouse Anti-Human CD45 Antibody and either Pacific Blue Mouse IgG2b, κ Isotype Control (Left panel) or Pacific Blue Mouse Anti-Human CD235a/b Antibody (Right panel) at 5 μl/test. Flow cytometry and data analysis were performed using BD FACSymphony™ A1 and FlowJo™ software.

Background
CD235a/b proteins, also known as glycophorins A and B, are type I transmembrane sialoglycoproteins expressed on human erythrocytes, erythroid precursor cells, and certain leukemic cell types. CD235a (glycophorin A) is a single-pass transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 10 kD, present in the cell membrane as a homodimer. It serves as the carrier for blood group M and N specificities and plays a role in reducing red blood cell aggregation in circulation. Additionally, CD235a acts as a receptor for certain viruses and bacterial adhesins, such as Sandei virus, parvovirus, and Streptococcus adhesin Hsa.
