Background
CD42b, also known as glycoprotein Ib alpha (GPIbα), is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on platelets and megakaryocytes. It is a key component of the GPIb-IX-V receptor complex, which plays a critical role in platelet adhesion and thrombus formation by binding to von Willebrand factor (vWF) at sites of vascular injury. CD42b interacts with various molecules, including thrombin, coagulation factors XI and XII, and P-selectin, contributing to hemostasis and thrombosis. Mutations or polymorphisms in CD42b are associated with diseases such as Bernard-Soulier syndrome and platelet-type von Willebrand disease.
